Youth Counselor ~ ResidenSea | The World Cruise Ship

Job Description:

The Youth Counselor will enhance our Enrichment team with care giving and entertainment of our youth and children on board The World.  The ideal candidate will have excellent camp activities and/or previous cruise ship experience in this area.  This position is seasonal; will commence on December 15, 2010 through January 3, 2011.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Sets a positive example and behaves like a leader at all times.
  • Ensure duties are carried out in accordance with the company policies, job descriptions, Safety and Environmental regulations. 
  • Create, plan and oversee the activities of children between the ages of 5 and 17.
  • Develop new Children’s programs.
  • Keep account of time spent supervising and caring for each child as Youth Coordinator.
  • Manage and control Palettes (Crafts Room).
  • Actively participate in trainings provided by the company including cross training opportunities. 
  • Continue own education by staying abreast of trends and sharing this information with the team.
  • Comply with the grooming and uniform standards of the company at all times.
  • Is knowledgeable of, and actively supports the goals for the department as well as the company as a whole to ensure high quality and consistent service.
  • Enforces and actively supports the Company standards, policies and procedures.
  • Creation and implementation of new policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Company initiatives as assigned.
  • Adheres to the SOP’s at all times and participates in the ongoing creation of SOP’s.
  • Is aware of and references the company’s strategic plan, audit sheets and goals on a daily basis.
  • Ensures his/her relevant area is maintained in accordance with Company policy, Public Health (HACCP), SMS, Safety and Environmental regulations.
  • Complete daily walk-through of Palettes (Craft Room) to ensure cleanliness.
  • Conduct weekly Public Health inspections of Palettes (Craft Room) with the Enrichment Manager.
  • Ensure Resident and Guest complaints are dealt with in a timely, professional manner and recorded using the I.C.A.N system.
  • Ensure reports are completed and submitted on time.
  • Reviews the Operational Log daily to identify areas of deficiency and offer suggestions on how to correct.
  • Continuously review the operation and make recommendations to management on how to enhance the product.
  • Regularly communicate with the Enrichment Manager regarding the children’s program.
  • Submit work orders (AVOs) through Fidelio for repairs and follow up to ensure timely completion.
  • Conducts inventories on a monthly basis in accordance with the SOP.
  • Helps enforce cost control procedures by minimizing waste and breakage.
  • Develop and maintain par stocks for assigned area.
  • Assist management with training and induction of new personnel.
  • Attends meetings held by the Enrichment Manager to discuss objectives, observations, progress and results achieved. 
  • Ensure effective communication with Management, Co-workers, Residents and Guests.
  • Supports Interns and offers assistance to them throughout their Internship.
  • Exceed Resident and Guest expectations of the onboard children’s program.
  • Develop a positive working relationship with all shipboard departments to facilitate a team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Work together with and support others in a professional manner.
  • Ensure that cleaning schedules are in place and being followed in assigned areas.
  • Submit information for the Daily Announcement and Week @ a Glance in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that all working hours, including overtime, have been recorded accurately and truthfully on his/her timesheet for each time period worked.

Other Functions

  • Ability to work long hours, day and night, including weekends and holidays
  • Able to work 7 days a week for a minimum period of 16 consecutive weeks
  • Ability to live in close quarters and share limited cabin space with other Crewmembers
  • Ability to handle stress well and work under pressure
  • Assist with Zodiac landings
  • Assist with Beach BBQ’s

DIMENSIONS

  • Is able to read, write and fluently speak English and does so at all times while on duty
  • One additional language (French, German, Spanish, Japanese) preferred
  • Proactive, Team Player, Problem Solver
  • Passionate about hospitality and is service driven
  • Must have a professional appearance and good hygiene
  • Outgoing and fun personality with good social interaction and skills
  • Respect for all co-workers, Residents and Guests

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Youth Coordinator or similar position.
  • Experience on an ultra luxury cruise ship, private club, boutique hotel, ultra luxury hotel or resort preferred but not required.
  • Courses or training in safety, environmental, Public Health regulations and procedures are required
  • First Aid and CPR Certifications.
  • Excellent computer skills to include creating and working with spreadsheets, Word, Excel, Outlook and Fidelio.

EDUCATION

  • BA/BS 3-4 year degree or foreign equivalency in Early Childhood Education or similar.

ATTRIBUTES

  • Able to develop a camaraderie with team members

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, all team members are required to stand; walk long distances on the ship; use hands to touch, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, taste and smell.  All vessel positions require repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and downstairs and lifting more than 25 pounds.  This job requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 
  • All team members must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving procedures and drills. All vessel positions require full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
  • Work within different temperature changes—indoors to outdoors.
  • Able to pass basic safety course.
  • This is a minimal description of duties. Other work requirements may be necessary and assigned as business or maritime law dictates.
